Mentor | Steve Simon
Steve Simon has been passionate about documenting life through photography since he began taking photographs at age 12 in his home city of Montreal. He graduated from Concordia University in Montreal with a degree in Communications/Journalism. Mr. Simon has participated as a guest lecturer and workshop leader at various photography and arts events in Canada, The United States, and Argentina. He has had solo shows in New York, Buenos Aires, Toronto and Montreal and his work has been featured three times at the Visa Pour L’Image Photography Festival in Perpignan, France. His work is in the permanent collections of The George Eastman House, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Comune Di Verona. Mr. Simon has received numerous international awards including The Global Health Council Photography Award for his work on AIDS in Africa, An Alfred Eisenstaedt Magazine Photography Award Nomination, Art Director’s Club of New York Award, The Canadian Association of Journalists Award for work in Africa and The Canadian Press News Picture of The Year, The Canadian Newspaper Photographer of The Year, The National Press Photographers Association Picture Of The Year. He has four previously published books, Heroines & Heroes: Hope, HIV and Africa (ISBN-88-8158-610-X), The Republicans (ISBN-88-8158-561-8), on the Republican Convention in New York City published by Charta. Healing Waters (ISBN 0-88864-277-6) documenting the healing powers of a small lake in Alberta; and Empty Sky-The Pilgrimage to Ground Zero (ISBN 2-7604-0914-7), an excerpt of which was included in Time-Life’s book The American Spirit, forward by George W. Bush Recent work has been published in Mother Jones, The New York Times Magazine, Life, Colors, German Geo, Le Monde, Macleans, The Globe and Mail, Walrus The Digital Journalist and Harpers He is based in New York City, but is frequently in Montreal and Toronto.
